Study: Spying Using Phone Call Records Is Easy

Stanford University researchers used call records to uncover heart problems, marijuana habits of volunteers.

Phone metadata doesn’t reveal what people say, but such records of calls and text messages can help spy agencies, businesses or hackers discover private information about someone’s relationships, shopping interests and even health problems, according to a study published on Monday.

The research published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences showed that scans of call records help create detailed maps of not just the person being investigated, but also the lives of contacts in their phone history. Metadata is the term used for the receipt of a call or a text message included in the history of a phone, and these records are often maintained by a telecom service provider.

"Once a participant was labeled as in a relationship, we found that identifying the participant’s partner was trivial,” according to the researchers. “Our results suggest that, even without human review, a business or agency could draw sensitive inferences from a significant share of telephone records.”

Researchers at Stanford University conducted the study using a custom-built Android app called MetaPhone to gather records of more than 250,000 phone calls and 1 million text messages from more than 800 volunteers. The app collected a small database of recent call records of users that helped researchers find information including which businesses people could be connected to.

The team checked their assumptions about users against data available on public services like Facebook, Google and Yelp to determine which volunteers owned a rifle, had heart problems or were planning to grow marijuana.

“There are significant privacy impacts associated with telephone metadata surveillance,” the researchers stated. “This project emphasizes the need for scientifically rigorous surveillance regulation."

The Obama administration has downplayed the importance of call metadata because it does not include voice or text recordings of conversations, but it has acknowledged privacy concerns about the issue after details of broad spying by the National Security Agency were leaked to the press in 2013.

President Barack Obama signed the USA Freedom Act into law last year, forcing the NSA to shutter its wholesale collection of phone records - but the agency can still request that data using federal court orders.

America is an oligarchy, not a democracy or republic, university study finds

America is no longer a democracy — never mind the democratic republic envisioned by Founding Fathers.

Rather, it has taken a turn down elitist lane and become a country led by a small dominant class comprised of powerful members who exert total control over the general population — an oligarchy, said a new study jointly conducted by Princeton and Northwestern universities.

One finding in the study: The U.S. government now represents the rich and powerful, not the average citizen, United Press International reported.

In the study, “Testing Theories of American Politics: Elites, Interest Groups and Average Citizens,” researchers compared 1,800 different U.S. policies that were put in place by politicians between 1981 and 2002 to the type of policies preferred by the average and wealthy American, or special interest groups.

Researchers then concluded that U.S. policies are formed more by special interest groups than by politicians properly representing the will of the general people, including the lower-income class.

“The central point that emerges from our research is that economic elites and organized groups representing business interests have substantial independent impacts on U.S. government policy, while mass-based interest groups and average citizens have little or no independent influence,” the study found.

The study also found: “When a majority of citizens disagrees with economic elites and/or with organized interests, they generally lose.”

Muslim Women Face German Job Barriers - Discrimination study

    20 September 2016

An experiment in Germany has found evidence of job discrimination against women with Turkish names - and even more if they wear an Islamic headscarf.

A university researcher sent 1,500 identical CVs to German firms - except that some bore the name Meryem Ozturk and others the name Sandra Bauer.

In 18.8% of cases Sandra Bauer was invited for interview, whereas the figure for Meryem was just 13.5%.

When the photo of Meryem showed her in a headscarf only 4.2% invited her.

The study was published by the Institute for the Study of Labour, in Bonn. The researcher was Doris Weichselbaumer from the University of Linz, in Austria.

The findings are especially significant in light of Germany's current efforts to integrate record numbers of Muslim migrants, many of them refugees from the conflicts in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan.

More than a million asylum seekers reached Germany last year, and there has been a backlash from nationalist groups, especially Pegida and Alternative for Germany (AfD).

With an estimated three million people of Turkish origin, Germany is home to the largest Turkish diaspora.

    'Modern-looking' headscarf

In her study, Ms Weichselbaumer said that "a very modern binding of the headscarf was chosen to signal that the applicant was a young, modern woman who could easily fit into a secular environment".

It is normal in Germany to attach a photo to a job application, she pointed out.

The result of the experiment "implies that the candidate with the headscarf had to send 4.5 times as many applications as an identical applicant with a German name and no headscarf to receive the same number of callbacks for interview", she said.

Discrimination appeared to intensify when the job required a higher skill level. When Ms Ozturk in a headscarf was applying for a secretarial job she had to send off 3.5 times more applications than Ms Bauer. For the post of chief accountant Ms Ozturk had to make 7.6 times more applications.

Ms Weichselbaumer has found similar levels of discrimination in Austria. A female Nigerian job applicant was only half as successful as an Austrian woman in getting invitations to interview, her research showed in 2013.

Study: Muslim Job Candidates May Face Discrimination In Republican States

    By Neha Sahgal - November 26, 2013

A new study by Carnegie Mellon University found that in the most Republican states in the country, employers may be less likely to interview job candidates whose social networking profiles indicate that the applicants are Muslim.

As part of a social experiment, the researchers created four fictitious job candidates - each with a unique name that most likely points to someone who is male, U.S. born and Caucasian. The candidates had identical resumes. The researchers also created social network profiles for each of the candidates that revealed either his sexual orientation or whether he was a Muslim or Christian. All other information, including the profile photograph used for each candidate, was the same. The resumes, which did not mention the candidates' online profile, were then sent out to more than 4,000 employers nationwide with job openings.

Readers should note that the study's authors did not design the pool of open jobs to be representative of all jobs available in the country, or in Republican-leaning or Democrat-leaning states. The number of job vacancies varied from state to state, and overall, a smaller share of all open jobs was located in Republican states.

In both Republican and Democratic states, there was no difference between the call backs received by the gay candidate as compared with the straight candidate. But in the Republican states, the Christian candidate received more interview calls than the Muslim candidate. In the 10 states with the highest proportion of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney voters in the 2012 election, 17% of Christian applicants received interview calls, compared with 2% of the Muslim job candidates. There were no differences in call backs received by the Christian and Muslim candidates in the 10 states with the lowest proportion of Romney voters.

The study is not the first to pick up on perceived negative views of Muslims in America. Nearly half of Muslim Americans pointed to either negative views about Muslims (29%) or discrimination and prejudice (20%) as the most pressing issues facing their community in a 2011 Pew Research Center survey. At the same time, however, more than half (56%) of Muslim Americans surveyed also said that they are satisfied with the way things are going in the country.

The Carnegie Mellon study also seems to support our findings about workplace treatment of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans. An overwhelming proportion of LGBT Americans say they are more accepted in society today than they were 10 years ago, according to our 2013 survey. When asked about specific experiences with discrimination, 5% of LGBT Americans say that in the past year they have been treated unfairly by an employer because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

    Comments:

This study is from 2013, now post Trump election we can expect those figures to be much higher and from both democratic and republican states.

27% of Europeans Think Rape Can Be Justifiable, New Study Finds

    11.30.16

The survey also revealed attitudes to domestic abuse and sexual harassment

More than a quarter of Europeans think rape can be justifiable in some circumstances, in a new study that has found wide-ranging attitudes to consent across the E.U.

The survey of attitudes towards consent and victim-blaming were released by the European Commission on Nov. 24 to coincide with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. In the study, 27% of participants said rape was justifiable in some circumstances and more than one in five respondents (22%) believe that women often make up or exaggerate claims of abuse or rape. Almost 30,000 Europeans took part in the survey, which explored attitudes to domestic violence, sexual harassment and sexual intercourse without consent.

Respondents were presented with a series of scenarios, such as being drunk or wearing revealing clothing, and were asked whether sexual intercourse without consent would be justified in any of them. Views on this question were varied by country, with respondents from eastern European countries including Hungary and Romania were most likely to say that rape was acceptable in each of these scenarios — 55% of Romanian respondents and 47% of those in Hungary.

The report’s authors noted the need for wider education and awareness raising across the E.U., particularly on issues surrounding consent, concluding that “there are still Member States where there is considerable work to do in addressing perceptions about gender-based violence.”

Thousands of slaves in Israel, global study finds

Global Slavery Index finds Jewish state doing relatively well, but problem persists

    2013

Israel has as many as 8,500 slaves, according to a new comprehensive study of worldwide slavery. Israel placed 111 out of 162 slave-holding countries in the Global Slavery Index 2013, recently published by the Australian Walk Free Foundation. Mauritania was found to have the most serious slavery problem.

According to the study, the first-ever country-by-country survey of its kind, Israel has 7,700 to 8,500 slaves.

The study claimed that “foreign workers make 40-90 percent of the populations of Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Israel, the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait.”

However, in Israel there are 300,000 foreign workers out of a total population of 8 million. The Walk Free Foundation could not be reached for clarification by the time of publication.

The trend in Israel is driven by the sex trade and the human trafficking that comes with it. There are 15,000 prostitutes in Israel, Rebecca Hughes from ATZUM’s Task Force on Human Trafficking wrote in The Times of Israel, entering the profession at an average age of 14. [no enters prostitution at age 14 unless forced to]

“By the 1990’s Israel was established as a destination country for trafficking, and international sex trafficking victims had replaced the local market,” Hughes wrote. “Israel’s flesh trade was booming and making between half a billion to three quarters of a billion dollars a year. It was a particularly desirable market for traffickers because the purchase of sexual services was, and still is, legal in Israel. ”

“Throughout the 1990’s traffickers acted with impunity and, according to the Hotline for Migrant Workers, smuggled 3,000 women annually into Israel,” she added.

The deteriorating situation led the US State Department to rank Israel as a Tier 3 nation in its Trafficking in Persons report, the lowest ranking. Tier 3 nations faced potential economic sanctions. The report was a wake-up call for Israel’s government, which passed a comprehensive anti-trafficking law, and was upgraded to a Tier 1 state.

According to the index, there are nearly 30 million people trapped in slavery around the world.

The study defined slavery as “the possession and control of a person in such a way as to significantly deprive that person of his or her individual liberty, with the intent of exploiting that person through their use, management, profit, transfer or disposal. Usually this exercise will be achieved through means such as violence or threats of violence, deception and/or coercion.”

It relied on secondary sources for its study, especially reports from media, NGOs, and governments. It also used local surveys and interviews.

In absolute numbers, India led the list with up to 14.7 million slaves, followed by China and Pakistan. Mauritania, with 3.8 million inhabitants and over 150,000 slaves, had the highest prevalence of slavery. Ireland, Iceland, and the UK enjoy the lowest prevalence of slavery, the survey said.

The Walk Free Foundation is a nonprofit that seeks to end modern slavery, according to its website. The organization was founded in May 2012 by Australian metal magnate Andrew Forrest, who first became aware of the problem when his teen-aged daughter worked alongside slaves at a Nepalese orphanage.

Couples who share the housework are more likely to divorce, study finds

    2016

Divorce rates are far higher among “modern” couples who share the housework than in those where the woman does the lion’s share of the chores, a Norwegian study has found.

In what appears to be a slap in the face for gender equality, the report found the divorce rate among couples who shared housework equally was around 50 per cent higher than among those where the woman did most of the work.

“What we’ve seen is that sharing equal responsibility for work in the home doesn’t necessarily contribute to contentment,” said Thomas Hansen, co-author of the study entitled “Equality in the Home”.

The lack of correlation between equality at home and quality of life was surprising, the researcher said.

“One would think that break-ups would occur more often in families with less equality at home, but our statistics show the opposite,” he said.

The figures clearly show that “the more a man does in the home, the higher the divorce rate,” he went on.

The reasons, Mr Hansen said, lay only partially with the chores themselves.“Maybe it’s sometimes seen as a good thing to have very clear roles with lots of clarity ... where one person is not stepping on the other’s toes,” he suggested.“

There could be less quarrels, since you can easily get into squabbles if both have the same roles and one has the feeling that the other is not pulling his or her own weight.” But the deeper reasons for the higher divorce rate, he suggested, came from the values of “modern” couples rather than the chores they shared.“

Modern couples are just that, both in the way they divide up the chores and in their perception of marriage” as being less sacred, Mr Hansen said. “In these modern couples, women also have a high level of education and a well-paid job, which makes them less dependent on their spouse financially. They can manage much easier if they divorce,” he said.

Norway has a long tradition of gender equality and childrearing is shared equally between mothers and fathers in 70 per cent of cases. But when it comes to housework, women in Norway still account for most of it in seven out of 10 couples. The study emphasised women who did most of the chores did so of their own volition and were found to be as “happy” those in “modern” couples.

Dr Frank Furedi, Sociology professor at the University of Canterbury, said the study made sense as chore sharing took place more among couples from middle class professional backgrounds, where divorce rates are known to be high.“

These people are extremely sensitive to making sure everything is formal, laid out and contractual. That does make for a fairly fraught relationship,” he told the Daily Telegraph.“

The more you organise your relationship, the more you work out diaries and schedules, the more it becomes a business relationship than an intimate, loving spontaneous one.“That tends to encourage a conflict of interest rather than finding harmonious resolutions.” He said while the survey applied to Norway, he was confident the results would be the same in the UK.“

In a good relationship people simply don’t know who does what and don’t particularly care. “Unless marriage is a relationship above anything else, then whenever there are tensions or contradictions things come to a head. You have less capacity to forgive and absorb the bad stuff.”

The survey appeared to contradict another recent one across seven countries including Britain that found that men who shouldered a bigger share of domestic responsibilities had a better sense of wellbeing and enjoyed a better work-life balance.

The researchers expected to find that where men shouldered more of the burden, women’s happiness levels were higher. In fact they found that it was the men who were happier while their wives and girlfriends appeared to be largely unmoved.

Those men who did more housework generally reported less work-life conflict and were scored slightly higher for wellbeing overall.Experts suggested that, while this may be partly because they felt less guilty, the main reason could be that they had simply learnt the secret of a quiet life.

A third of White male university students say they would rape a woman in a ‘consequence-free situation’, study shows

    2015

A study found that almost a third of the male university students they interviewed would rape a woman if there were no consequences.

The study, published in the scientific journal Violence and Gender, asked students how they would act in certain sexual scenarios in an effort to assess sexual attitudes and hostility towards women on university campuses.

But when asked what the students – the majority of which were white male Americans – would do in a situation where they could have sex against the will of the woman but without ‘any consequences’, 31.7% said they would go ahead and have sexual intercourse – in other words, they would rape the woman.

When asked if they would ‘rape’ a woman – with that wording – and if there were no consequences, the figure fell to 13.6%. The authors suggest the discrepancy between the two figures shows that some men have an idea of what ‘rape’ is and what the stereotypical ‘rapist’ looks like, but fail to see that the behaviour they endorse is rape.

The findings could have huge implications for sexual education programmes, specifically in dismissing preconceived notions of ‘rape’ or ‘the rapist’ in favour of more behaviourally-descriptive definitions.

86 people from the University of North Dakota and the North Dakota State University took part in the study.

Harvard study says 70 percent of domestic violence is committed by women against men

    November 15, 2013

Newscast Media HOUSTON—Three years ago I wrote an article based on a scientific study done by Harvard Medical School that revealed domestic violence was not as one-sided as the media often depicts it. The article to this very day is the second most popular article I've written and is widely cited online and offline.

I have since discovered that the original article that was published on the Harvard Medical School Web site has been scrubbed, and my guess is that certain activist groups perhaps pressured the professors to remove it. Most of these institutions depend on endowments and grants to function, so it is understandable how that may have been the cause of its removal. As you can see, if you click on this original hyperlink, the article is gone:

However, fear not. Even three years ago, my discernment and sound judgment enabled me to envisage something like that happening, so I took a screen-shot of the entire article, just in case it was taken down. I am re-posting the article and will compress it into PDF format that way you are able to use it as a reference resource. You will find the PDF at the very end of the article.

One thing about Newscast Media is that it does not receive any funds from sponsors and is self-funded, therefore we are not beholden to any entity, and have the liberty to publish content as we so wish. That's what true independent and objective journalism exemplifies.

Another interesting aspect of the article is the comments section. There are over 250 comments on this particular article, that you might find either amusing, or instructive at the very end. Below is the original article:

    ================================================== =====

Original article by Joseph Earnest July 15, 2010

Newscast Media HOUSTON—As the media flashes images and plays tapes of Mel Gibson screaming at his former lover, one has to wonder what the other side of the story is. It is obvious that Mel Gibson was set up by his girlfriend, whom he claims tried to extort him. While I don't condone any kind of violence, I have to present to my reading audience some cold hard facts that the 'mainstream media' has chosen to ignore in relation to domestic violence.

Forensic expert Arlo West said on Good Morning America, in regard to the tapes, "I believe these are professionally done. I think she had help. She clearly was speaking into what we call a large diaphragm microphone. Her voice is very well engineered. She sounds great. To authenticate a recording it must be an original."

The information presented to you comes from investigative research of data produced by reputable organizations like Harvard Medical School, The Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the American Psychiatric Association, just to mention a few.

The mainstream media seems to imply that men are the sole perpetrators of violence against women, but research proves otherwise. A recent study by Harvard Medical School conducted a survey of 11,000 men and women and found that 50% of the violence was reciprocal. Both men and women also took responsibility for being equally violent in the heat of passion.

The Harvard study found that when violence was one-sided, meaning unprovoked, both men and the women themselves who took the study said 70% of the time it was the women who committed violence against the men.

Another study by the American Psychiatric Association that backs the Harvard Medical School study was published by Joan Arehart-Treichelwho says, "When it comes to non-reciprocal violence between intimate partners, women are more often the perpetrators."

Study Shows How Contact Lenses Can Affect Your Appearance Over Time

And it’s true for both hard and soft contact lenses, according to this new study involving identical twins.

    by Jenna Birch - June 5, 2015

While contact lenses might improve your eyesight without the need for clunky glasses, they might also be having an unintended effect on your appearance. According to a new study published in Aesthetic Surgery Journal, use of contact lenses seemingly leads to eyelid droopiness.

Researchers reviewed photographs of 96 sets of identical twins who met in Twinsburg, Ohio, on a yearly basis from 2008 to 2010, measuring the level of eyelid droopiness (called “ptosis”) in each.

These 39-year-old female identical twins had differing levels of ptosis. The patients were visually identified from a twins database and had individual ptosis measured in each eye. The twin on the left did not wear contact lenses; the twin on the right did wear contact lenses.

Nine different environmental factors were considered as a potential cause for ptosis, and they were evaluated through an extensive questionnaire and special standardized photography to determine the degree of eyelid droopiness in each twin.

According to the data collected, wearing either hard or soft contact lenses was associated with ptosis. The average difference in eyelid droopiness between twins was 0.5 millimeters. Among twins who didn’t wear contacts, ptosis was around 1.0 millimeter. In twins who wore soft contacts, that number increased to 1.41 millimeters, rising further to 1.84 millimeters for those who sported hard contacts. (Luckily, with the advent of soft lenses, hard lenses have all but disappeared.)

These 65-year-old female identical twins had differing levels of ptosis related to wearing contact lenses. The subject on the left wore soft contact lenses and had less ptosis than her twin; the subject on the right wore hard contact lenses and had more severe ptosis than her twin.

The researchers also looked for links between ptosis and BMI, smoking, sun exposure, alcohol consumption, work-related stress, and sleep — none of which had a statistically significant impact on eyelid droopiness. The association between contact use and ptosis has been long assumed but never proven, says lead study author Bahman Guyuron, MD, FACS, a facial plastic surgeon based in Cleveland, Ohio.

“Since the identical twins are genetically destined to have similar facial and eyelid features, if there is a difference, it is primarily related to the environmental factors,” Guyuron tells Yahoo Health. “We were able to demonstrate that, of the external factors unrelated to the genes or aging, use of contacts was the only factor that linked to the droopy eyelids.”

Guyuron says the effect they saw was “related to the weakening of the muscles that lift the upper eyelid, and not related to loose or redundant eyelid skin.” And while the mere-fractions-of-a-millimeter difference might seem small, it’s enough to affect vision and appearance.

“Even a minimal droopiness of the eyelids denotes lack of vigor, tiredness, and getting old — often prematurely on the contact lens users,” says Guyuron. And in a culture constantly seeking the fountain of youth, this may matter to some.

Guyuron says that plastic surgeons regularly perform a couple of key procedures for droopiness. According to data from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, 165,714 eyelid procedures and 31,315 brow lifts were performed on patients in 2014.

“Correction of droopy eyelids is one of the simplest and most rewarding surgeries that plastic surgeons do,” says Guyuron. “It is usually a very short procedure, it often requires very minimal recovery, and it makes the patients look younger and more energetic.”

Of course, eyelid droopiness will occur with each passing year anyway — and you can always switch to glasses if you’re concerned about the effects of contact use.

Scientists Say That Starting Work Before 10am Is Similar To Torture

    2017

Dr. Paul Kelley, a leading researcher at Oxford University, has recently discovered that the most common form of modern day torture is actually having to wake up and start work before 10 o’clock in the morning, something that affects an enormous amount of us.

Our bodies run on biological timers, known as our Circadian Rhythm. This is our body clock if you like, and it is a genetically pre-programmed cycle which regulates our brain activity, energy levels, hormone production and perception of time. By starting work before 10 am every day, we are scientifically torturing ourselves through unnaturally interfering with our Circadian Rhythm, thus throwing many aspects of our health out of balance.

    Kelley says:

“We cannot change our 24-hour rhythms. You cannot learn to get up at a certain time…your liver and your heart have different patterns and you’re asking them to shift two or three hours.”

    How Did This Happen?

Introduced in the early 20th century, the 8 hour working day was designed around the maximisation of 24/7 factory productivity, not taking into account the natural human body clock. However, our ancient bodies evolved around the daily cycle of sunlight, not these modern day strategies of business and commerce! Dr Paul Kelley, speaking at the British Science Festival says:

“We’ve got a sleep deprived society” and “This is an international issue. Everybody is suffering and they don’t have to.”

His idea was to move the start time of a school in Britain from 8.30 am to 10.00 am. Upon testing this theory at a chosen school, after a certain amount of time and a further wave of exams, he wasn’t surprised to see that the attendance levels had improved along with the general productivity of the school – and most importantly the students’ grades were up drastically.

If we were to transfer this idea into other sectors of society just think of the improvements. Instead of overtired, overworked, coffee intoxicated zombies working in the hours of the day when they should be sleeping, we would have a naturally productive, fully fledged, focused society of useful, happy people. The companies who are forcing their workers to start before 10 am are contributing to serious emotional and physical stresses felt by their employees and encouraging longer term adverse health risks as a result of these strict, unhealthy working patterns. These patterns could be a huge reason as to why the average American consumers over 3 cups of coffee every single day to try and keep themselves as alert as they possibly can. To put that into perspective, that’s 40 billion dollars a year – on coffee!

A study has found that bacon and other processed meats are bad for men's fertility

    By Laura Donnelly - October 15, 2013

Just one rasher of bacon a day can damage a man's fertility, while eating a portion of white fish such as cod or halibut every other day can improve it, researchers have suggested.

The study by Harvard University on 156 men in couples suffering problems conceiving examined their diet and the size and shape of their sperm.

Researchers found that men who regularly ate processed meat had significantly lower amounts of normal sperm, compared with those who limited the amount of foods like bacon, sausages, hamburgers, ham and mince.

On average, those who ate the equivalent of less than a rasher of bacon a day had 30 per cent more normal sperm than those who ate higher quantities of processed meats.

Meanwhile, those who ate a portion of white fish every other day had a similar edge over those who ate foods such as cod more rarely.

Dr Myriam Afeiche, from the Department of Nutrition at Harvard School of Public Health, said: "We found that processed meat intake was associated with lower semen quality and fish was to higher semen quality."

Few studies have examined the relationship between processed meat and fertility and Dr Afeiche said it was not clear why such foods might negatively affect sperm quality.

Dr Allan Pacey, a fertility expert at the University of Sheffield, said it was already known that a healthy diet could improve male fertility, but it was less clear whether specific foods could be blamed for a deterioration in sperm quality.

He said: "The relationship between diet and men's fertility is an interesting one and there is convincing evidence that men who eat more fresh fruit and vegetables have better sperm than men who don't. However, less is known about the fertility of men with poor diets."

Dr Pacey said it was extremely difficult to accurately measure the size and shape of sperm. However, he said advice to eat less processed meat and more fish was good health advice, regardless.

"It is already known that high intake of processed meat is linked to other health issues and so advising men to limit their intake of processed food may improve their health generally as well as possibly be good for their fertility," he said.

Study: Helicopter Parenting Negatively Influences Children

    by Sadie Blood

Helicopter parenting is exactly what it sounds like: hovering.

Helicopter parents are defined as parents who are over-involved and overbearing in the majority of aspects of their children’s lives, such as school, relationships, behaviors and so on.

Today’s society holds different opinions regarding how parents should raise their children. Many parents choose to control every decision, action and thought of their children in hopes of raising them correctly. Even though the parents’ intentions are good, this parenting style can have a negative effect on the children.

“I’ve yet to see a normal kid come from severely controlling parents,” said Nikki Dunnicliff, a full-time substitute teacher in the Murrieta Valley Unified School District in California. “The overprotective and overpowering parents try to control their kids both in and outside of the classroom. Many don’t realize how deeply they’re affecting their kid, and then they become defensive and in denial when their kid isn’t excelling in school.”

Dunnicliff frequently works with helicopter parents in a school setting and has come to see both the social and academic effects that helicopter parents have on their children.

In an ongoing nationwide study that began in 2007, hundreds of people were interviewed on 150 different college campuses. Researcher Jim Settle found that 60 percent of college students have at least one helicopter parent, a trend that concerns some who worry about the children’s development.

“It has been found that helicopter parenting is associated with negative aspects of emerging adults’ development, including more pessimistic views of marriage, (indications) of anxiety, depression and lower life satisfaction and psychological well-being,” BYU School of Family Life professor Larry J. Nelson said in a recent study.

Helicopter parenting has not been found to cause drug use in the children affected, but many of those who suffer from drug abuse do have issues with over-controlling parents.

“A lot of the time, residents’ parents are overbearing and don’t know how to set boundaries,” said Cirque Lodge rehabilitation center frontline tech Madison Swanson. “They expect their kid to make good choices, but they hover over their every move. Many adults here have parents that do not support them in their decisions but still try to control them in every shape, way or form.”

A lot of children rebel because they feel that they are kept on too tight of a leash
    , Swanson said.

Nelson also said research has shown that overbearing parenting correlates with the children’s sense of self-worth and the likelihood that they will act out in risky behavior.

Special education teacher’s assistant Susan Gull said she has seen how constant parental hovering can affect younger children’s abilities to internally cope and react to stressful situations. “I see a lot of parents who don’t think their kids can do certain things, so they baby them,” she said. “Sometimes, you have to learn to push them. There has to be a balance of knowing what they truly cannot do on their own and helping them to try to be more independent.”

Gull sees from a teacher’s point of view but also from a parent’s point of view. She has raised four children and said she has noticed that the behavior of her kids’ friends is different when they have over-controlling parents. “When the parents aren’t around, the kids get overly excited and don’t know how to react to certain things because they don’t have someone giving them constant instructions,” she said. “Many times, these kids become out of control and aggressive.

Whitney Brinton is a mother of three young children. Her youngest son, Grey, is 4 years old and struggles with speech and pronunciation. Grey meets weekly with a speech pathologist, along with many other kids his age.

Brinton has grown to know the other parents well and said she believes that the children who have helicopter parents are usually the ones in the group who do not show a desire to learn.

“Many parents will translate for their kids
because it’s easier and they don’t want their child to feel misunderstood,” she said. “But in the end, you’re doing a disservice to your child by never pushing them to step out of their comfort zone and try talking.”

Dunnicliff said she has seen many of her students fall behind in class because of their parents’ need to constantly control the situation. “I have one little girl in my class that has an extremely overbearing mom,” she said. “She holds her hand and walks her into class every day and won’t leave until about 10 minutes after class has started. She is always on the teachers’ backs about the lessons, when she has no idea the reason or educational construct behind each method.”

She said it is obvious that the daughter sees her mom as controlling and frequently gets embarrassed and seems to shut down. And when the mother is gone, it seems the daughter dramatizes situations because she doesn’t know how to handle her emotions without her mother or someone telling her how to feel or act.

The trend does not end with childhood.
In further research, Nelson studied how detrimental it could be for emerging adults to not step away from their parents and invest their time in developing themselves to become independent in areas such as relationships, work and social skills.

“By not doing so (learning to be independent), emerging adults may be robbing themselves of the experiences and practice necessary to develop skills that are essential for success in marriage, careers and adult social interactions,” Nelson said..

Muslims, Mexicans seen as less than human in US study

Psychologists say dehumanizing attitude promotes violence, non-cooperation

    2.2017

When Muslims and Mexican immigrants feel dejected by Americans they are more likely to support violent over non-violent action, a team of psychologists said in a report Monday.

The report comes amid White House rhetoric regarding both groups coming.

President Donald Trump signed an executive order last month that bars immigrants and refugees from seven predominately Muslim nations. Although a federal judge put a temporary halt on the ban, the action was seen by many as essentially a ban on Muslims.

Similarly, Trump has long pushed to crackdown on undocumented immigrants, especially those from Mexico and Central America.

In the new report, “Backlash: The Politics and Real-World Consequences of Minority Group Dehumanization," researchers from the University of Pennsylvania and Northwestern University found that singling out and demoralizing minorities can backfire on those, like some Trump supporters, who seem to believe the intolerance will keep Americans safer.

Survey takers rated different groups by using the famous “Ascent of Man” diagram, which displays human ancestors that begins with a primitive, ape-like figure and leads through several iterations all the way to an upright modern human.

Of the 1,100 Americans surveyed, Muslims and Mexican immigrants were thought of as less human than U.S. residents on the whole.
This view was especially prevalent among supporters of Trump, who was still a presidential candidate at the time of the survey.

On the whole, the survey of Americans, who were majority white, rated Muslims a 70 on a "humanness" scale of 0 to 100, with 100 being the most fully evolved modern man. Mexican immigrants were rated at about a 75. Americans were awarded about a 95 on the scale.

In another survey, Latinos and Muslims said that they perceived a high level of dehumanization stemming from Trump’s campaign, the Republican Party and Americans in general.

The more the perceived dehumanization, the more likely the participant would be inclined to support violent collective action over non-violent.

A high level of demoralization in American Muslim participants was also linked to a less willing attitude toward assisting law enforcement agencies with counterterrorism investigations.

"Feeling not only disliked, but dehumanized by another group has a profound effect on people," study co-author Emile Bruneau said in a statement. "If we use rhetoric and enact policies that make Muslims feel dehumanized, this may lead them to support exactly the types of aggression that reinforce the perception that they are 'less civilized' than 'us.' In this way, dehumanization can become self-fulfilling in the minds of the dehumanizers and justify their aggression."

Yale Study Finds Multiple Brain Disorders Have Been Linked To Vaccines

    2.2017

Not Just Autism, Major Yale Study Shows Vaccines Tied to Multiple Brain Disorders

Article via The Free Thought Project:

It is no question that the subject of vaccines is profoundly controversial. On both sides of the argument exist truths and lies that can hinder the ability of some to make rational decisions.

For the last 50 years, the world has taken a front row seat to the phenomenological occurrences of the rise of brain disorders such as Autism, ADHD, and major depressive disorders. Anecdotally speaking, parents all over the globe have reported that one day their children were normal and growing healthily, and the next, after having gotten their vaccinations, they get Autism, or ADHD, for example.

While science and the government continue to maintain there’s no causal relation between the vaccines and the disorders, parents, multiple studies, and other countries have reported otherwise. Now, it seems, some very brave and unabashed scientists have been able to show a correlation of what many have known for quite some time.

It has also been proven that CDC scientists destroyed data that showed a correlation between vaccines and autism in children.

Researchers at Pennsylvania State and Yale University sought to examine, “whether antecedent vaccinations are associated with increased incidence of obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD), anorexia nervosa (AN), anxiety disorder, chronic tic disorder, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, major depressive disorder, and bipolar disorder in a national sample of privately insured children.”

Controlling for broken bones and open wounds (control means to use commonly occurring instances as a contrast method), the researchers concluded that someone who’d received the Flu vaccine within the last year “were also associated with incident diagnoses of AN, OCD, and an anxiety disorder.” These findings greatly expand the common understandings that vaccines are related to Autism and now include the other three brain-based illnesses.

The study used private insurance claims information as their means of collecting the data. “Using claims data, we compared the prior year’s occurrence of vaccinations in children and adolescents aged 6–15 years with the above neuropsychiatric disorders that were newly diagnosed between January 2002 and December 2007,” the study writes.

Moreover, the correlations were not limited to the Flu vaccine either. According to the published study found in the Journal Frontiers in Psychiatry, “Several other associations were also significant with HRs greater than 1.40 (hepatitis A with OCD and AN; hepatitis B with AN,” meaning the hepatitis vaccines are also implicated in causing brain disorders.

As with most research studies, the researchers stop short of claiming the vaccinations cause the all too common brain disorders. “This pilot epidemiologic analysis implies that the onset of some neuropsychiatric disorders may be temporally related to prior vaccinations in a subset of individuals,” they write adding the, “findings warrant further investigation, but do not prove a causal role of antecedent infections or vaccinations in the pathoetiology of these conditions.”

The researchers also warn against the public deciding not to vaccinate their children. “Given the modest magnitude of these findings in contrast to the clear public health benefits of the timely administration of vaccines in preventing mortality and morbidity in childhood infectious diseases, we encourage families to maintain vaccination schedules according to CDC guidelines,” they conclude.

While we have everyone from attorneys to biologists, to political scientists who write for the Free Thought Project, none of us are doctors, so we do not make recommendations about what you and your family should do in regards to vaccination. That being said, the drug makers have an incentive for you not to see this information which means it will not be reported on in the mainstream media as their advertising dollars are tied directly to these companies. So, we find that it is our duty to spread this information and with your help sharing it, we can have a massive effect.

These are the people who discriminate against the Muslims the most and yet they claim to be victims, LOL.

White Evangelicals Believe They Face More Discrimination Than Muslims

A new study suggests different groups of Americans see their country in radically divergent ways.

    by EMMA GREEN - MAR 10, 2017

In February, pollsters at the Public Religion Research Institute asked Americans about their impressions of discrimination in the United States. Two religious groups were included on the list of those who might face bias: Christians and Muslims. Depending on who was answering, the responses were wildly different.

Overall, people were twice as likely to say Muslims face discrimination as they were to say the same thing about Christians. Democrats were four times more likely to see Muslim vs. Christian discrimination, and non-religious people more than three. White Catholics and white mainline Protestants were both in line with the American average: Each group was roughly twice as likely to say Muslims face discrimination compared to how they see the Christian experience.

The people who stuck out, whose perceptions were radically different from others in the survey, were white evangelical Protestants. Among this group, 57 percent said there’s a lot of discrimination against Christians in the U.S. today. Only 44 percent said the same thing about Muslims. They were the only religious group more likely to believe Christians face discrimination compared to Muslims.

Historical data suggests white evangelicals perceive even less discrimination against Muslims now than they did a few years ago—or before the election. When this question was asked in a December 2013 PRRI survey, 59 percent of white evangelicals said they think Muslims face a lot of discrimination. As late as last October, 56 percent said this was the case. As of February, that number had dropped by 12 percentage points. It’s possible that this finding is an anomaly—the sample size of white evangelicals in the February poll was smaller than in previous surveys—but it suggests a dramatic shift.

It’s difficult to quantify something as amorphous as “discrimination.” Perceptions like this might be shaped by everything from daily interactions to widely reported instances of assault, vandalism, or other intimidation motivated by bias. In terms of these kinds of hate crimes, Muslims fare far worse than Christians: 22 percent of religiously motivated crimes are against Muslims, compared to the 13.6 percent against Catholics, Protestants, Mormons, and other Christian denominations combined. Considering that Muslims are estimated to make up less than 1 percent of the American population, compared to Christians’ 70 percent, these numbers are even more stark. Jews, the group of people who are most likely to be the target of hate crimes, were not included in the PRRI survey as a category.

Meanwhile, the Trump administration used rhetoric and introduced policies that have made members of the Muslim community fearful. Progressives have labeled the recent executive order on immigration a “Muslim ban” because it targets predominantly Muslim countries. In his speeches, the president has emphasized the threat of “radical Islamic terrorism.” And Muslims have relatively little political power compared to other religious groups: Only two of the 535 members of Congress are part of the faith.

Other factors besides hate crimes and Trump’s policies have likely shaped white evangelicals’ perceptions. The questions about discrimination were included in a survey about LGBT issues, and for good reason: More than any other issue, changing cultural and legal norms around same-sex marriage and gender identity have raised objections from Christians. A number of court decisions from the last half decade or so may feed into white evangelicals’ perception that Christians face discrimination, including Obergefell v. Hodges, the 2015 Supreme Court ruling that legalized same-sex marriage.

That decision kicked off a wave of new challenges around religious conservatives’ right not to participate in gay wedding ceremonies, among other issues. Around the country, these cases are largely being resolved not in favor of religious plaintiffs: The Washington State Supreme Court recently ruled against a Christian florist who did not want to provide services at a gay couple’s wedding, for example.

These numbers cannot explain how different groups develop their perceptions of bigotry, whether it’s the media they consume, their geographic locations, or simply the communities they know best. But the survey does suggest something remarkable: White evangelicals perceive discrimination in America in vastly different terms than all other religious groups, including their minority peers.

Islamic prayer ritual reduces back pain and increases joint elasticity, study finds

Proper knee and back angles can be an effective clinical treatment, research finds

    by Peter Walke - 2/09/2017

The repetitive physical movements of Muslim prayer rituals can reduce chances of lower back pain if performed properly
    , according to new research.

The study found that not only does quiet prayer eliminate physical anxiety, but that proper knee and back angles can be an effective clinical treatment.

Roughly 1.6 billion Muslims worldwide bow, kneel and place their foreheads to the ground in the direction of Mecca up to five times a day,

“One way to think about the movements is that they are similar to those of yoga or physical therapy intervention exercises used to treat lower back pain,” said study co-author Mohammad Khasawneh.

The paper, entitled An ergonomic study of body motions during Muslim prayer using digital human modelling, was published in the latest issue of the International Journal of Industrial and Systems Engineering.

The research used computer-generated human models of healthy Indian, Asian, and American men and women to look at the effect on lower back pain.

The kneeling posture, known as sujud, apparently increases the elasticity of joints.

The team did not however look at how varying prayer rituals for physically disabled people will effect back pain.

“Physical health is influenced by socio-economic, lifestyle and religious factors,” added Mr Khasawneh, from Penn State Behrend university in Pennsylvania.

“Prayer can eliminate physical stress and anxiety, while there is also research that indicates prayer rituals can be considered an effective clinical treatment of neuro-musculoskeletal dysfunction.”

Terror attacks receive five times more media coverage if perpetrator is Muslim, study finds

Muslims carried out just 12.4 per cent of attacks in the US but received 41.4 per cent of news coverage

    07.08.2017

Terror attacks carried out by Muslims receive more than five times as much media coverage as those carried out by non-Muslims in the United States, according to an academic study.

Analysis of coverage of all terrorist attacks in the US between 2011 and 2015 found there was a 449 per cent increase in media attention when the perpetrator was Muslim.

Muslims committed just 12.4 per cent of attacks during the period studied but received 41.4 per cent of news coverage, the survey found.

The authors said the finding suggests the media is making people disproportionately fearful of Muslim terrorists.

Scientists studied US newspaper coverage of every terrorist attack on American soil and counted up the total number of articles dedicated to each attack.

They found that the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, which was carried out by two Muslim attackers and killed three people, received almost 20 per cent of all coverage relating to US terror attacks in the five-year period.

In contrast, reporting of a 2012 massacre at a Sikh temple in Wisconsin that left six people dead and was carried out by Wade Michael Page – a white man, constituted just 3.8 per cent of coverage.

A mass shooting by Dylann Roof, who is also white, at an African-American church in Charleston, South Carolina, killed nine people but received only 7.4 per cent of media coverage, while a 2014 attack by Frazier Glenn Miller on a Kansas synagogue left three dead but accounted for just 3.3 per cent of reports.

All of the above attacks are considered to meet widely-used definitions of terrorism
, according to researchers at Georgia State University.

The authors said their finding debunked Donald Trump’s suggestion, made in February, that the media is not reporting terrorist attacks carried out by Muslims.

“When President Trump asserted that the media does not cover some terrorist attacks enough, it turns out that he was correct,” they wrote. “However, his assertion that attacks by Muslim perpetrators received less coverage is unsubstantiated.

“Regardless of other factors, attacks perpetrated by Muslims receive a disproportionate amount of media coverage. In the present data, Muslims perpetrated 12.4 per cent of the attacks yet received 41.4 per cent of the news coverage.

“Whether the disproportionate coverage is a conscious decision on the part of journalists or not, this stereotyping reinforces cultural narratives about what and who should be feared.

“By covering terrorist attacks by Muslims dramatically more than other incidents, media frame this type of event as more prevalent. Based on these findings, it is no wonder that Americans are so fearful of radical Islamic terrorism. Reality shows, however, that these fears are misplaced.”

Fasting for Three Days Can Regenerate Entire Immune System, study finds

A person's entire immune system can be rejuvenated by fasting for as little as three days as it triggers the body to start producing new white blood cells, a study suggests

    By Sarah Knapton - 05 Jun 2014

Fasting for as little as three days can regenerate the entire immune system, even in the elderly, scientists have found in a breakthrough described as "remarkable".

Although fasting diets have been criticized by nutritionists for being unhealthy, new research suggests starving the body kick-starts stem cells into producing new white blood cells, which fight off infection.

Scientists at the University of Southern California say the discovery could be particularly beneficial for people suffering from damaged immune systems, such as cancer patients on chemotherapy.

It could also help the elderly whose immune system becomes less effective as they age, making it harder for them to fight off even common diseases.

The researchers say fasting "flips a regenerative switch" which prompts stem cells to create brand new white blood cells, essentially regenerating the entire immune system.

"It gives the 'OK' for stem cells to go ahead and begin proliferating and rebuild the entire system," said Prof Valter Longo, Professor of Gerontology and the Biological Sciences at the University of California.

"And the good news is that the body got rid of the parts of the system that might be damaged or old, the inefficient parts, during the fasting.

“Now, if you start with a system heavily damaged by chemotherapy or ageing, fasting cycles can generate, literally, a new immune system."

Prolonged fasting forces the body to use stores of glucose and fat but also breaks down a significant portion of white blood cells.

During each cycle of fasting, this depletion of white blood cells induces changes that trigger stem cell-based regeneration of new immune system cells.

In trials humans were asked to regularly fast for between two and four days over a six-month period.

Scientists found that prolonged fasting also reduced the enzyme PKA, which is linked to ageing and a hormone which increases cancer risk and tumor growth.

"We could not predict that prolonged fasting would have such a remarkable effect in promoting stem cell-based regeneration of the hematopoietic system," added Prof Longo.

"When you starve, the system tries to save energy, and one of the things it can do to save energy is to recycle a lot of the immune cells that are not needed, especially those that may be damaged,"
    Dr Longo said.

"What we started noticing in both our human work and animal work is that the white blood cell count goes down with prolonged fasting. Then when you re-feed, the blood cells come back. So we started thinking, well, where does it come from?"

Fasting for 72 hours also protected cancer patients against the toxic impact of chemotherapy.

"While chemotherapy saves lives, it causes significant collateral damage to the immune system. The results of this study suggest that fasting may mitigate some of the harmful effects of chemotherapy," said co-author Tanya Dorff, assistant professor of clinical medicine at the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center and Hospital.

"More clinical studies are needed, and any such dietary intervention should be undertaken only under the guidance of a physician.”

"We are investigating the possibility that these effects are applicable to many different systems and organs, not just the immune system," added Prof Longo.

However, some British experts were skeptical of the research.

Dr Graham Rook, emeritus professor of immunology at University College London, said the study sounded "improbable".

Chris Mason, Professor of Regenerative Medicine at UCL, said: “There is some interesting data here. It sees that fasting reduces the number and size of cells and then re-feeding at 72 hours saw a rebound.

“That could be potentially useful because that is not such a long time that it would be terribly harmful to someone with cancer. But I think the most sensible way forward would be to synthesize this effect with drugs. I am not sure fasting is the best idea. People are better eating on a regular basis.”

Dr Longo added: “There is no evidence at all that fasting would be dangerous while there is strong evidence that it is beneficial. I have received emails from hundreds of cancer patients who have combined chemo with fasting, many with the assistance of the oncologists. Thus far the great majority have reported doing very well and only a few have reported some side effects including fainting and a temporary increase in liver markers. Clearly we need to finish the clinical trials, but it looks very promising.”

    Fasting Three Days in Islam

It was narrated that Abu Dharr said: "The Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said to me, 'If you fast any part of the month then fast on the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth.'" (al-Nasaa'i, 2424; Ibn Maajah, 1707; Ahmad, 210; classed as saheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh al-Jaami' al-Sagheer, 673).

The prophet - peace and blessings be upon him - said "Fasting three days of every month (13th, 14th, 15th) is equal to Fasting the life time" [Declared Hasan by Al-Albani]

    what are the white days?

The white days are the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth of every lunar month, they were named with this name because the moon becomes full on them and the light becomes strong which makes their nights completely luminous especially in desert, after that name was used for the days.
